Abu Hurairah narrated: "We went with the Messenger of Allah during Hajj or Umrah and we encountered a swarm of locusts. We began striking at them with our whips and set our staffs, and the Prophet said: "Eat it, for indeed it is game of the sea."

حدثنا أبو كريب، حدثنا وكيع، عن حماد بن سلمة، عن أبي المهزم، عن أبي هريرة، قال خرجنا مع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في حج أو عمرة فاستقبلنا رجل من جراد فجعلنا نضربه بسياطنا وعصينا فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ كلوه فإنه من صيد البحر ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قال أبو عيسى هذا حديث غريب ‏.‏ لا نعرفه إلا من حديث أبي المهزم عن أبي هريرة ‏.‏ وأبو المهزم اسمه يزيد بن سفيان وقد تكلم فيه شعبة ‏.‏ وقد رخص قوم من أهل العلم للمحرم أن يصيد الجراد ويأكله ورأى بعضهم عليه صدقة إذا اصطاده وأكله ‏.‏

Abu Hurairah reported the Prophet (ﷺ) as saying “Locusts are counted along with what is caught in the sea (i.e., the game of the sea).”

حدثنا محمد بن عيسى، حدثنا حماد، عن ميمون بن جابان، عن أبي رافع، عن أبي هريرة، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ‏"‏ الجراد من صيد البحر ‏"‏ ‏.‏

It wasnarrated from Abu Darda’ that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ)said: “Amilitary expedition by sea is like ten expeditions by land.The onewho suffers from seasickness is like one who gets drenched inhis ownblood in the cause of Allah.”

حدثنا هشام بن عمار، حدثنا بقية، عن معاوية بن يحيى، عن ليث بن أبي سليم، عن يحيى بن عباد، عن أم الدرداء، عن أبي الدرداء، أن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ‏"‏ غزوة في البحر مثل عشر غزوات في البر والذي يسدر في البحر كالمتشحط في دمه في سبيل الله سبحانه ‏"‏ ‏.‏

It was narrated that Abu Dharr said: "I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Everyone in the universe, in the heavens and on earth, prays for forgiveness for the scholar, even the fish in the sea."

حدثنا هشام بن عمار، حدثنا حفص بن عمر، عن عثمان بن عطاء، عن أبيه، عن أبي الدرداء، قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول ‏"‏ إنه ليستغفر للعالم من في السموات ومن في الأرض حتى الحيتان في البحر ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Jabir b. Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) sent an expedition to the sea coast and I was one among them. The rest of the hadith is the same with a slight variation of wording that in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Wahb b. Kaisan (the words are): " The army ate out of that (the whale) for eighteen days."

وحدثنا أبو كريب، حدثنا أبو أسامة، حدثنا الوليد، - يعني ابن كثير - قال سمعت وهب بن كيسان، يقول سمعت جابر بن عبد الله، يقول بعث رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم سرية أنا فيهم إلى سيف البحر ‏.‏ وساقوا جميعا بقية الحديث كنحو حديث عمرو بن دينار وأبي الزبير غير أن في حديث وهب بن كيسان فأكل منها الجيش ثماني عشرة ليلة ‏.‏

Abu Hurairah said: "A man asked the Prophet (ﷺ): 'O Messenger of Allah, we travel by sea and we take a little water with us, but if we use it for Wudu', we will go thirsty. Can we perform Wudu', with sea-water?' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Its water is a means of purification and its dead meat is permissible.'"

أخبرنا قتيبة، عن مالك، عن صفوان بن سليم، عن سعيد بن سلمة، أن المغيرة بن أبي بردة، من بني عبد الدار أخبره أنه، سمع أبا هريرة، يقول سأل رجل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال يا رسول الله إنا نركب البحر ونحمل معنا القليل من الماء فإن توضأنا به عطشنا أفنتوضأ من ماء البحر فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ هو الطهور ماؤه الحل ميتته ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: What the sea throws up and is left by the tide you may eat, but what dies in the sea and floats you must not eat.Abu Dawud said: This tradition has been transmitted by Sufyan al-Thawri, Ayyub and Hammad from Abu al-Zubair as the statement of Jabor himself (and not from the Prophet). It has been also transmitted direct from the Prophet (ﷺ) through a weak chain by Abu Dhi'b, from Abu al-Zubair on the authority if Jabir from the Prophet (ﷺ).

حدثنا أحمد بن عبدة، حدثنا يحيى بن سليم الطائفي، حدثنا إسماعيل بن أمية، عن أبي الزبير، عن جابر بن عبد الله، قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ ما ألقى البحر أو جزر عنه فكلوه وما مات فيه وطفا فلا تأكلوه ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قال أبو داود روى هذا الحديث سفيان الثوري وأيوب وحماد عن أبي الزبير أوقفوه على جابر وقد أسند هذا الحديث أيضا من وجه ضعيف عن ابن أبي ذئب عن أبي الزبير عن جابر عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏.‏

It was narrated that Ibn 'Abbas said: "A woman traveled by sea and vowed to fast for a month, but she died before she could fast. Her sister came to the Prophet and told him about that, and he told her to fast on her behalf."

أخبرنا بشر بن خالد العسكري، قال حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، عن شعبة، قال سمعت سليمان، يحدث عن مسلم البطين، عن سعيد بن جبير، عن ابن عباس، قال ركبت امرأة البحر فنذرت أن تصوم شهرا فماتت قبل أن تصوم فأتت أختها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وذكرت ذلك له فأمرها أن تصوم عنها ‏.‏

Narrated Abu 'Ali al-Hamdani: We were with Fudalah b. 'Ubaid at Rudis in the land of Rome. One of our Companions dies, Fudalah commanded us to dig his grave; it was (dug and) levelled. He then said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanding to level them.Abu Dawud said: Rudis is an island, in the sea.

حدثنا أحمد بن عمرو بن السرح، حدثنا ابن وهب، حدثني عمرو بن الحارث، أن أبا علي الهمداني، حدثه قال كنا مع فضالة بن عبيد برودس من أرض الروم فتوفي صاحب لنا فأمر فضالة بقبره فسوي ثم قال سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يأمر بتسويتها ‏.‏ قال أبو داود رودس جزيرة في البحر ‏.‏

Narrated Anas bin Malik: Whenever Allah's Apostle went to Quba, he used to visit Um Haram bint Milhan who would offer him meals; and she was the wife of 'Ubada bin As-samit. One day he went to her house and she offered him a meal, and after that he slept, and then woke up smiling. She (Um Haram) said, "I asked him, 'What makes you laugh, O Allah's Apostle?' He said, 'Some people of my followers were displayed before me as warriors fighting for Allah's Cause and sailing over this sea, kings on thrones,' or said, 'like kings on thrones.' (The narrator, 'Is-haq is in doubt about it.) I (Um Haram) said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah that He may make me one of them.' He invoked (Allah) for her and then lay his head and slept again and then woke up smiling. I asked, 'What makes you laugh, O Allah's Apostle?' He said, 'Some people of my followers were displayed before me as warriors fighting for Allah's Cause and sailing over this sea, kings on the thrones,' or said, 'like kings on the thrones.' I (Um Haram) said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Invoke Allah that He may make me one of them.' He said, You will be amongst the first ones." It is said that Um Haram sailed over the sea at the time of Muawiya, and on coming out of the sea, she fell down from her riding animal and died.

حدثنا إسماعيل، قال حدثني مالك، عن إسحاق بن عبد الله بن أبي طلحة، عن أنس بن مالك رضى الله عنه أنه سمعه يقول كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا ذهب إلى قباء يدخل على أم حرام بنت ملحان فتطعمه، وكانت تحت عبادة بن الصامت، فدخل يوما فأطعمته، فنام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم استيقظ يضحك‏.‏ قالت فقلت ما يضحكك يا رسول الله فقال ‏"‏ ناس من أمتي عرضوا على غزاة في سبيل الله، يركبون ثبج هذا البحر، ملوكا على الأسرة ‏"‏‏.‏ أو قال ‏"‏ مثل الملوك على الأسرة ‏"‏‏.‏ شك إسحاق قلت ادع الله أن يجعلني منهم‏.‏ فدعا ثم وضع رأسه فنام، ثم استيقظ يضحك فقلت ما يضحكك يا رسول الله قال ‏"‏ ناس من أمتي عرضوا على، غزاة في سبيل الله، يركبون ثبج هذا البحر، ملوكا على الأسرة ‏"‏‏.‏ أو ‏"‏ مثل الملوك على الأسرة ‏"‏‏.‏ فقلت ادع الله أن يجعلني منهم‏.‏ قال ‏"‏ أنت من الأولين ‏"‏‏.‏ فركبت البحر زمان معاوية، فصرعت عن دابتها حين خرجت من البحر، فهلكت‏.‏

Abu Hurairah narrated: "A man asked Allah's Messenger 'O Messenger of Allah! We sail the seas, and we only carry a little water with us. If we use it for Wudu then we will go thirsty. So shall we perform Wudu from the (water of the) sea?' Allah's Messenger said: 'Its water is pure, and its dead are lawful.'"

حدثنا قتيبة، عن مالك، ح وحدثنا الأنصاري، إسحاق بن موسى حدثنا معن، حدثنا مالك، عن صفوان بن سليم، عن سعيد بن سلمة، من آل ابن الأزرق أن المغيرة بن أبي بردة، وهو من بني عبد الدار أخبره أنه، سمع أبا هريرة، يقول سأل رجل رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال يا رسول الله إنا نركب البحر ونحمل معنا القليل من الماء فإن توضأنا به عطشنا أفنتوضأ من ماء البحر فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ هو الطهور ماؤه الحل ميتته ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قال وفي الباب عن جابر والفراسي ‏.‏ قال أبو عيسى هذا حديث حسن صحيح ‏.‏ وهو قول أكثر الفقهاء من أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم منهم أبو بكر وعمر وابن عباس لم يروا بأسا بماء البحر ‏.‏ وقد كره بعض أصحاب النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم الوضوء بماء البحر منهم ابن عمر وعبد الله بن عمرو ‏.‏ وقال عبد الله بن عمرو هو نار ‏.‏

Abdullah bin Amr narrated that : the Messenger of Allah said: “there is not anyone upon the earth who says: ‘None has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest, and there is no might nor power except by Allah, (La Ilaha Illallah, Wa Allahu Akbar, Wa La Hawla Wa La Quwwata Illa Billah) except that his sins shall be pardoned, even if they were like the foam of the sea.”

حدثنا عبد الله بن أبي زياد الكوفي، حدثنا عبد الله بن أبي بكر السهمي، عن حاتم بن أبي صغيرة، عن أبي بلج، عن عمرو بن ميمون، عن عبد الله بن عمرو، قال قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ ما على الأرض أحد يقول لا إله إلا الله والله أكبر ولا حول ولا قوة إلا بالله ‏.‏ إلا كفرت عنه خطاياه ولو كانت مثل زبد البحر ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قال أبو عيسى هذا حديث حسن غريب ‏.‏ وروى شعبة هذا الحديث عن أبي بلج بهذا الإسناد نحوه ولم يرفعه وأبو بلج اسمه يحيى بن أبي سليم ويقال أيضا يحيى بن سليم ‏.‏ حدثنا محمد بن بشار، حدثنا ابن أبي عدي، عن حاتم بن أبي صغيرة، عن أبي بلج، عن عمرو بن ميمون، عن عبد الله بن عمرو، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نحوه وحاتم يكنى أبا يونس القشيري ‏.‏حدثنا محمد بن بشار، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، عن شعبة، عن أبي بلج، نحوه ولم يرفعه ‏.‏

It was narrated that Anas bin Malik said: "When the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went to Quba' he used to come to Umm Haram bint Milhan and she would feed him. Umm Haram was married to 'Ubadah bint As-Samit. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ entered upon her and she fed him and checked his head for lice. The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) fell asleep, then he woke up smiling. She said: 'What is making you smile, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Some people of my Ummah were shown to me, fighting in the cause of Allah and riding across the sea like kings on thrones.' I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.' So the Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.' So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) prayed for her then he slept again.'" (One of narrators) Al-Harith, said (in his narration): "He slept then he woke up smiling. I said to him: 'What is making you smile, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'Some people of my Ummah were shown to me, fighting in the cause of Allah and riding across the sea like kings on thrones,' as he had said the first time. I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, pray to Allah to make me one of them.' He said: 'You will be one of the first.' And she traveled by sea at the time of Mu'awiyah, then she fell from her mount when she came out of the sea and died."

أخبرنا محمد بن سلمة، والحارث بن مسكين، قراءة عليه وأنا أسمع، عن ابن القاسم، قال حدثني مالك، عن إسحاق بن عبد الله بن أبي طلحة، عن أنس بن مالك، قال كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إذا ذهب إلى قباء يدخل على أم حرام بنت ملحان فتطعمه وكانت أم حرام بنت ملحان تحت عبادة بن الصامت فدخل عليها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يوما فأطعمته وجلست تفلي رأسه فنام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم استيقظ وهو يضحك قالت فقلت ما يضحكك يا رسول الله قال ‏"‏ ناس من أمتي عرضوا على غزاة في سبيل الله يركبون ثبج هذا البحر ملوك على الأسرة أو مثل الملوك على الأسرة ‏"‏ ‏.‏ شك إسحاق ‏.‏ فقلت يا رسول الله ادع الله أن يجعلني منهم فدعا لها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ثم نام - وقال الحارث فنام - ثم استيقظ فضحك فقلت له ما يضحكك يا رسول الله قال ‏"‏ ناس من أمتي عرضوا على غزاة في سبيل الله ملوك على الأسرة أو مثل الملوك على الأسرة ‏"‏ ‏.‏ كما قال في الأول فقلت يا رسول الله ادع الله أن يجعلني منهم ‏.‏ قال ‏"‏ أنت من الأولين ‏"‏ ‏.‏ فركبت البحر في زمان معاوية فصرعت عن دابتها حين خرجت من البحر فهلكت ‏.‏

It was narrated from Hudhaifah that the Messenger of Allah said: "There was a man among those who came before you who thought badly of his deeds, so when death was approaching he said to his family: 'When I am dead, burn my body and grind up my bones, then scatter me in the sea, for if Allah gets hold of me, He will never forgive me.' But Allah commanded the angles to seize his soul. He said to him: 'What made you do what you did?' He said:: 'O Lord, I only did it because I feared You.' So Allah forgave him."

أخبرنا إسحاق بن إبراهيم، قال حدثنا جرير، عن منصور، عن ربعي، عن حذيفة، عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال ‏"‏ كان رجل ممن كان قبلكم يسيء الظن بعمله فلما حضرته الوفاة قال لأهله إذا أنا مت فأحرقوني ثم اطحنوني ثم اذروني في البحر فإن الله إن يقدر على لم يغفر لي ‏.‏ قال فأمر الله عز وجل الملائكة فتلقت روحه قال له ما حملك على ما فعلت قال يا رب ما فعلت إلا من مخافتك ‏.‏ فغفر الله له ‏"‏ ‏.‏

It wasnarrated that Sulaim bin ‘Amr said: I heard Abu Umamah saying:Iheard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: “The martyr at sea is liketwo martyrs on land, and the one who suffers seasickness is like onewho gets drenched in his own blood on land. The time spent betweenonewave and the next is like a lifetime spent in obedience to Allah.Allah has appointed the Angel of Death to seize souls, except for themartyr at sea, for Allah Himself seizes their souls. He forgives themartyrs on land for all sins except debt, but (He forgives) themartyrat sea all his sins and his debt.”

حدثنا عبيد الله بن يوسف الجبيري، حدثنا قيس بن محمد الكندي، حدثنا عفير بن معدان الشامي، عن سليم بن عامر، قال سمعت أبا أمامة، يقول سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول ‏"‏ شهيد البحر مثل شهيدى البر والمائد في البحر كالمتشحط في دمه في البر وما بين الموجتين كقاطع الدنيا في طاعة الله وإن الله عز وجل وكل ملك الموت بقبض الأرواح إلا شهيد البحر فإنه يتولى قبض أرواحهم ويغفر لشهيد البر الذنوب كلها إلا الدين ولشهيد البحر الذنوب والدين ‏"‏ ‏.‏

Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "An Israeli man asked another Israeli to lend him one thousand Dinars. The second man required witnesses. The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a witness.' The second said, 'I want a surety.' The former replied, 'Allah is sufficient as a surety.' The second said, 'You are right,' and lent him the money for a certain period. The debtor went across the sea. When he finished his job, he searched for a conveyance so that he might reach in time for the repayment of the debt, but he could not find any. So, he took a piece of wood and made a hole in it, inserted in it one thousand Dinars and a letter to the lender and then closed (i.e. sealed) the hole tightly. He took the piece of wood to the sea and said. 'O Allah! You know well that I took a loan of one thousand Dinars from so-and-so. He demanded a surety from me but I told him that Allah's Guarantee was sufficient and he accepted Your guarantee. He then asked for a witness and I told him that Allah was sufficient as a Witness, and he accepted You as a Witness. No doubt, I tried hard to find a conveyance so that I could pay his money but could not find, so I hand over this money to You.' Saying that, he threw the piece of wood into the sea till it went out far into it, and then he went away. Meanwhile he started searching for a conveyance in order to reach the creditor's country. One day the lender came out of his house to see whether a ship had arrived bringing his money, and all of a sudden he saw the piece of wood in which his money had been deposited. He took it home to use for fire. When he sawed it, he found his money and the letter inside it. Shortly after that, the debtor came bringing one thousand Dinars to him and said, 'By Allah, I had been trying hard to get a boat so that I could bring you your money, but failed to get one before the one I have come by.' The lender asked, 'Have you sent something to me?' The debtor replied, 'I have told you I could not get a boat other than the one I have come by.' The lender said, 'Allah has delivered on your behalf the money you sent in the piece of wood. So, you may keep your one thousand Dinars and depart guided on the right path.' "

قال أبو عبد الله وقال الليث حدثني جعفر بن ربيعة، عن عبد الرحمن بن هرمز، عن أبي هريرة رضى الله عنه عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ‏"‏ أنه ذكر رجلا من بني إسرائيل سأل بعض بني إسرائيل أن يسلفه ألف دينار، فقال ائتني بالشهداء أشهدهم‏.‏ فقال كفى بالله شهيدا‏.‏ قال فأتني بالكفيل‏.‏ قال كفى بالله كفيلا‏.‏ قال صدقت‏.‏ فدفعها إليه إلى أجل مسمى، فخرج في البحر، فقضى حاجته، ثم التمس مركبا يركبها، يقدم عليه للأجل الذي أجله، فلم يجد مركبا، فأخذ خشبة، فنقرها فأدخل فيها ألف دينار، وصحيفة منه إلى صاحبه، ثم زجج موضعها، ثم أتى بها إلى البحر، فقال اللهم إنك تعلم أني كنت تسلفت فلانا ألف دينار، فسألني كفيلا، فقلت كفى بالله كفيلا، فرضي بك، وسألني شهيدا، فقلت كفى بالله شهيدا، فرضي بك، وأني جهدت أن أجد مركبا، أبعث إليه الذي له فلم أقدر، وإني أستودعكها‏.‏ فرمى بها في البحر حتى ولجت فيه، ثم انصرف، وهو في ذلك يلتمس مركبا، يخرج إلى بلده، فخرج الرجل الذي كان أسلفه، ينظر لعل مركبا قد جاء بماله، فإذا بالخشبة التي فيها المال، فأخذها لأهله حطبا، فلما نشرها وجد المال والصحيفة، ثم قدم الذي كان أسلفه، فأتى بالألف دينار، فقال والله ما زلت جاهدا في طلب مركب لآتيك بمالك، فما وجدت مركبا قبل الذي أتيت فيه‏.‏ قال هل كنت بعثت إلى بشىء قال أخبرك أني لم أجد مركبا قبل الذي جئت فيه‏.‏ قال فإن الله قد أدى عنك الذي بعثت في الخشبة فانصرف بالألف الدينار راشدا ‏"‏‏.‏

Abu Hurairah said, We found a swarm of Locusts. A man who was wearing ihram began to strike it with his whip. He was told that his action was not valid. The fact was mentioned to the Prophet (ﷺ); He said “That is counted along with the game of the sea.”I heard Abu Dawud say “The narrator Abu Al Muhzim is weak. Both these traditions are based on misunderstanding.

حدثنا مسدد، حدثنا عبد الوارث، عن حبيب المعلم، عن أبي المهزم، عن أبي هريرة، قال أصبنا صرما من جراد فكان رجل منا يضربه بسوطه وهو محرم فقيل له إن هذا لا يصلح فذكر ذلك للنبي صلى الله عليه وسلم فقال ‏"‏ إنما هو من صيد البحر ‏"‏ ‏.‏ سمعت أبا داود يقول أبو المهزم ضعيف والحديثان جميعا وهم ‏.‏
